Western fascination with ancient Egyptian arts and design-arguably has existed from Greco-Roman times to the post-Modern era. Throughout the centuries, several influential events have inspired Egyptian Revivals, notably: Napoleon Bonaparte's 1789 Egyptian Campaign, Howard Carter's discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, and the King Tut exhibition tour in the 1970s. During these periods of "Egyptomania," Western artists and designers appropriated ancient Egyptian motifs, incorporating symbols such as pyramids, sphinxes, obelisks, and scarabs on furniture, decorative accessories, and jewelry, as shown in the stunning examples displayed at the show.
